At the beginning of the pandemic last year, Kara Vecchi came across the VFW Auxiliary “Illustrating America” contest and decided to enter.
“I enjoyed researching individuals who, to me, represented America,” the 13-year-old Gates Middle School student said. “My entry included research on George Washington, Martin Luther King Jr., Helen Keller, and Susan B. Anthony. I saw that the VFW was sponsoring the Illustrating America contest again this year, and I knew I wanted to submit an entry.”
When she sees the American Flag, Kara thinks of the Star Spangled Banner, she said.
“I included the flag in last year s entry and wanted to include it in this year s entry, which I did standing proudly in front of the White House. When I picture the White House and Washington D.C, I think of the heart of our country and the home of our president. To me, my entry illustrates America.”

There were plenty of comings and goings in Scituate in 2020. We take a look back at some of the people covered by the Mariner this year.

Betty Foster stepped down as the longtime Town Archivist after 22 years.
“There are so many fascinating things to discover in the archives,” she said. “Scituate has one of the most complete sets of records from Plymouth Colony. I have vital records that go back to the 1600s. I truly enjoyed finding obscure things about the town that I didn’t know, and I truly loved the people I met. I met wonderful people.”
