DELAWARE – House Bill 195 proposes body camera’s for police, in the state of Delaware. As of Wednesday, May 12, the bill has been reported out of committee. Now committee members say, this has a good chance of passing, with a few adjustments.
This Act requires police officers and some employees of the Department of Correction and Department of Services for Children, Youth, and Their Families to wear a body worn camera. The committee was focused on adding more public members to the police council.
The other major issues addressed in the committee, was who would be viewing the footage once recorded from the body cam footage. They say it’s important to make amendments to make sure the bill has the best potential of passing, so it better serves law enforcement and the community. Delaware Representative, Ruth Briggs-King says, “The main thing is to ensure the process of looking at, who’s going to have access to these recordings, how will they be used.

Medical marijuana patients from across Sussex County protested in front of Columbia Care’s Rehoboth Beach dispensary April 24. The group said they are fed up with unnecessarily high prices, not enough medicine and the state’s medical marijuana providers coming out against legislation to legalize marijuana in Delaware.
Frankford’s Lillyanne Ternahan is the patient who organized the protest.
“We’re here to spread awareness and get the word out,” said Ternahan, taking a break from yelling organized chants into a lime-green megaphone adorned with a marijuana leaf decal. “When these guys opened, I was excited about the possible options, but they’re always understocked and the prices are too high. The price gouging is horrendous.”

Task force recommendations to reform police practices and transparency in Delaware are a far cry from introducing a bill that passes the House and Senate and gets signed by the governor.
But Thursday’s virtual public meeting on Zoom by a group that includes lawmakers, citizens, and law enforcement leaders revealed a consensus for change on several fronts.

After months of subcommittee hearings, members voted Thursday to:
Amend Delaware’s use-of-force statute to establish a reasonable objective standard instead of a subjective one. Under the current law, an officer only needs to say he believed he was in imminent danger to avoid prosecution.

Corporate behemoth Amazon has waded into Delaware s minimum wage battle with a recent campaign supporting a $15 starting wage for all. Senate Bill 15, which would raise Delaware s minimum wage to $15 an hour for all workers, moved through committee April 21 and now awaits action in the House.
“Maintaining the status quo on Delaware’s minimum wage, which is one of the lowest in the mid-Atlantic region, isn’t just unfair to hourly workers, it’s also a missed opportunity to strengthen our economy,” said an Amazon spokesman when asked about why Amazon had taken out full-page advertising in favor of SB 15.
