not medical emergencies. we just spoke with the fire chief of the city. he said if this plan went through, it would definitely impact public safety. the idea comes as the community mourns the loss of three people. they were murdered during a tour hour period sunday. two of the victims are teenager boys. now city councilmember is reintroducing an idea from a 2011 grand jury report. it found 70% of fire department calls are not fire related. the councilmember says the money saved by having the fire department respond to fires could put 100 more on the street. the fire chief said public safety would suffer. it would be a significant impact providing services on the fireside. we have fewer firefighters than we should have for a city this size. reporter: the fire chief says the fire department actually saves the community money by cutting down the amount we spend on a fee for service ambulance. he also says that the city received $24 million in fema grants to boost up its staf
