Batra eyes second term as world hockey body chief

New Delhi, May 22 (IANS): Indian Olympic Association (IOA) chief Narinder Batra, who is aiming for a second term as president of International Hockey Federation (FIH), faces Marc Coudron of Belgium for the top post in FIH presidential election due to take place on Saturday evening.
Batra, who is also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), became chief of FIH in 2016.
The Indian sports administrator, in the build up to FIH election, unveiled 11 key steps he will take to lift global hockey to next level.
Batra s first term was extended after FIH delayed the Congress to 2021 due to pandemic.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has confirmed British company Lumi will operate the voting in the Presidential election at its remote Congress next month.
Lumi has been entrusted with running electronic votes for a host of International Federations during the coronavirus pandemic and it had been widely expected it would be selected by the FIH.
An independent notary from British firm Cheeswrights Scrivener Notaries LLP will chair and oversee the election process, the FIH said.
Incumbent President Narinder Batra is being challenged by Royal Belgian Hockey Association head Marc Coudron in the election, the main item on the agenda for the May 22 Congress.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) Presidential election will now be held virtually after the organisation abandoned plans to hold its Congress next month as a hybrid event because of the COVID-19 situation in India.
The FIH earlier this month had offered its members the chance to attend the Congress in person in New Delhi or remotely amid the restrictions placed on travel due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In a statement, the FIH Executive Board said it had decided to stage the event on May 22 online following a proposal from President Narinder Batra.
The decision was made considering the latest information available about the current status of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is worrying both in India and in many other countries of the world, as well as the impact of this situation on international travel , the FIH said.
FIH to hold hybrid Presidential election after confirming Congress plans Thursday, 1 April 2021
The International Hockey Federation (FIH) Presidential election will be held in a hybrid format after the organisation confirmed its members would be able to attend its Congress remotely or in person in New Delhi.
Incumbent President Narinder Batra is being challenged by Royal Belgian Hockey Association (KBHB) head Marc Coudron in the election, which the FIH said would remain on May 22.
In a statement, the FIH said staging a hybrid Congress would give all members the chance to take part irrespective of whether they are currently able or not to travel internationally due to the global COVID-19 pandemic .
