Authorities on the Iron Range say a 5-year-old boy has died after falling falling into a mine pit.
The incident at the Rouchleau Pit in Virginia was reported at 4:09 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The Virginia Police Department responded to the report of someone falling over the side of the mine pit, located near 3rd Street North and 1st Avenue North.
Law enforcement were able to locate the child s body. The boy fell approximately 70 feet.
The Rouchleau Mine Pit, which is filled with water, is on the eastern edge of Virginia and reaches a depth of 450 feet. A bridge carrying U.S. Highway 53 over the pit is the tallest in Minnesota.
