Some locals react to airspace expansion plan - Roswell Daily Record

Copyright © 2021 Roswell Daily Record Airport directors in Roswell and Artesia had wanted the U.S. Air Force to choose some other option besides expanding its F-16 fighter pilot training airspace only in this area of the state, but they now must work with the decision that the Air Force has landed on after a five-year process. The Air Force has identified the Talon MOA expansion, known as Alternative 1, as the preferred option in its final Environmental Impact Statement released Feb. 5 and under a review period until March 8. Staff of the Artesia Municipal Airport and city of Artesia officials expressed their concerns in 2018 and 2019 during scoping meetings and public hearings because the Talon MOA expansion will be a significant increase of airspace use in Eddy County.

Concerns over rules slow down City Council meeting - Roswell Daily Record

The meeting got off to a contentious start as councilors and the mayor discussed for 45 minutes approving the agenda with items removed from the consent agenda, an amendment to place half of the items back on the consent agenda and the rules of order to do so. The consent agenda is used to approve in one action those items that are thought of as routine or non-controversial. Thursday’s consent agenda contained 12 items that had previously been before the various standing committees and the minutes from meetings in November and December.

City considers agreement with county on Air Center funds

Copyright © 2021 Roswell Daily Record Roswell Mayor Dennis Kintigh and some city councilors expressed concerns at a Thursday morning meeting about a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Chaves County over the use of a $5 million state appropriation for the Roswell Air Center. Members of the Roswell Finance Committee City Councilors Jason Perry, Jacob Roebuck and Margaret Kennard voted after the discussion that the draft MOU should be reviewed by all city councilors at a Jan. 14 City Council meeting. Kintigh had some specific concerns about the “vagueness” of the MOU, as well as priorities for spending the funds. Kennard and City Councilor Jeanine Corn Best expressed their upset over the 2020 state capital outlay award itself, saying they thought the county should have received city approval before asking for the funding because the airfield and its related properties are owned by the city.
