Health leaders say a surge in hospitalizations is preventable and are urging people to get vaccinated. Author: Lindsey Mills Updated: 6:27 PM EDT August 2, 2021
COLUMBUS, Ohio According to the latest from the Ohio Department of Health’s coronavirus dashboard, there are more than 700 covid hospitalizations reported Monday.
That’s more than double the number from two weeks ago.
Local health leaders say we are heading in the wrong direction and fear it may get worse before it gets better.
“A surge in hospitalizations is completely preventable, said Dr. Nora Colburn, an infectious disease physician and Medical Director of Epidemiology for the Ross Heart Hospital at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
It only took a minute for Chuck McMullens’ pain to go from annoying to catastrophic.
The Newark resident was sitting July 6 on his front porch, when he felt a pain in his lower abdomen, “like maybe I had to use the restroom,” he said.
When he stood up to go inside, though, he collapsed. He had lost feeling in his legs and the pain intensified.
“It felt like an octopus was grabbing and squeezing my stomach,” he said.
On the verge of passing out, McMullens managed to dial 911. He could hear the squad coming up his driveway as he drifted in and out of consciousness.
