Oakridger To the Editor: I wanted to respond to the letter to the editor by Eileen Neiler published in the July 15 edition of The Oak Ridger. Eileen was absolutely correct that Girl Scout Troop 69, under the leadership of Joyce Maienschien, were the founders of the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge (CMOR). The history of the Museum can be found on the CMOR website (childrensmuseumofoakridge.org). As Selma Shapiro’s daughter and project lead for the Alvin Weinberg Archive, I want to express my appreciation and gratitude to Girl Scout Troop 69 for having the vision and passion to start a small museum in the Library of the old Jefferson Junior High School. Without that simple start, my mother wouldn’t have had the amazing “second act” of her life, and the city of Oak Ridge wouldn’t have this treasure of a Museum for the last 48 years.  As it states on the CMOR website, “Selma was the driving force behind the Museum’s growth for 31 years, and her vision made the Museum

Deeply personal writings opens rare snapshot into the mind of ORNL s Cold War era leader The Knoxville News-Sentinel 6 hrs ago Vincent Gabrielle, Knoxville News Sentinel Alvin Weinberg has an incredible resume, if you will.  He came to Oak Ridge in 1945 as a Manhattan Project scientist and stayed in the city until his death in 2006. He was an influential nuclear physicist and the longest-serving director of Oak Ridge National Lab, home of some of the country s most important scientific achievements. He was a scientific bridge between the use of the nuclear bomb to the importance of climate change.  But the personal stories behind the man are far, far more interesting.
