To the Editor:
I wanted to respond to the letter to the editor by Eileen Neiler published in the July 15 edition of The Oak Ridger. Eileen was absolutely correct that Girl Scout Troop 69, under the leadership of Joyce Maienschien, were the founders of the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge (CMOR). The history of the Museum can be found on the CMOR website (childrensmuseumofoakridge.org).
As Selma Shapiro’s daughter and project lead for the Alvin Weinberg Archive, I want to express my appreciation and gratitude to Girl Scout Troop 69 for having the vision and passion to start a small museum in the Library of the old Jefferson Junior High School. Without that simple start, my mother wouldn’t have had the amazing “second act” of her life, and the city of Oak Ridge wouldn’t have this treasure of a Museum for the last 48 years.
