A forest fire on South Mountain that kept firefighters busy for hours Sunday and into Monday was set off accidentally at Camp Tuckahoe, a Boy Scout facility in the northern York County woods, a scout official said Monday.
Ronald Gardner, Jr., CEO and Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts’ New Birth of Freedom Council, said debris that had been burned during work at the camp earlier apparently reignited Sunday afternoon.
“The property has been closed since October in order to cut down and remove unhealthy and unstable trees to protect the health and safety of all camp attendees,” Gardner said. “As part of this effort, groups of volunteers and employees have dedicated several Saturdays to the careful removal of debris caused by this process, which includes burning some of the material.”
