Carolina during the last months of the civil war. This is about an hour. Thank you, david. Can everyone hear me okay . Yes. All right. Well, we have watched the armies of grant and lee moving across the virginia landscape from the siege of petersberg, to the surrender at appomattox courthouse, now im going to make a detour. Were going to make a sharp turn south and turn back the clock. Were going back to december of 1864. And were going to follow this man, general William T Sherman and his progress in what he believes and hopes will be his final campaign of the war. Now sherman and grant are pursuing the grand strategy that they formulated in march of 1864 in cincinnati, ohio. The idea was to keep the armies in the east and in the west, the confederate armies so busy that they cannot reinforce each other. And not have a repeat fiasco in the battle of chickamauga. And now this strategy is working slopely but inex orablely. While grant keeps lees army bottled up around petersberg and ric

A question about the supplemental the schofield supplement to the surrender terms. How were they received in washington and were they successfully carried out . What i think happened is when they reached washington about a week later, they saw it as an accomplished fact. The most controversial provision would have been letting 1 in 7 confederates keep their weapons. I think they felt that would not be too harmful. I would say that and i did not go into this because i did not have time there was a great deal of furor up north about the terms because secretary stanton had sent his reasons for his approving them to the newark times to the New York Times where they become public knowledge. Sherman was furious and he found out. Amid all of that, the supplemental terms slipped through without much notice. We do know they were approved. Time for another question if anyone has one. Thank you. Thank you. Appreciate it most of [applause] we do have two of marx books marks books here. So grab mar

We will get you some. Its on park row. My talk is referred to as black thursday, the battle for Sailors Creek. One of the Union Generals who was involved in the battle, he wrote in his book about the fighting 5 of the intelligent people of the united states, north or south ever heard of the battle of Sailors Creek. They dont know anything of its magnitude or importance. This is not strange. It was fought in virginia. This was three days before the surrender under general robert e lee. Events were happening so rapidly that no note was made of the battle. In the next few minutes, you will be part of that part of our nation. Just some point before we talk about the battle, there are three separate engagements referred to as the battles of Sailors Creek. As you enter the museum, it refers to it as batt

Long days and lose track of things and make bad decisions. You are fatigue mentally fatigued mentally and physically. When word comes out that there is a flag of truce it is a shock. And really shakes them to their foundations, it is really hard to accept. They have been fighting and all of a sudden the war will be over quickly. The surrender meeting takes place in the mclean house, a private home chosen for the occasion. There are about a dozen witnesses in the room. Of course when you have a dozen or so witnesses you are going to get a dozen or so different stories. One of the frustrating things is that a lot of the accounts do not agree. We agree on a lot of the general details but not necessarily the order of things and some accounts mention one thing and others do not. In general we understand the flow of the conversation and what the generals talked about. The terms that grant offers to generally general lee were inspired by president lincoln who wanted to end the war easily and
