Man shot by Daytona Beach Police last week has died

A mentally ill man who was shot by Daytona Beach police last week after police said he ran at an officer while armed with a sharp object has died. Andy A. Mansilla, 25, died after he was shot Dec. 17, Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young confirmed in a phone interview Wednesday. It was unclear Wednesday when Mansilla died. Young said that he could not comment on the shooting, which is being investigated as is routine by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Body camera video showed Mansilla running at the officer, who warned him to stop. And while it may not have helped in the shooting last week, the Daytona Beach Police Department is working with SMA Healthcare to have counselors on iPads ready to intervene before future situations escalate to violence. 

Daytona Beach Police said they shot man at One Daytona

A man who ran at police while holding a “sharp object” and refused to stop is now in critical condition after he was shot Thursday night by Daytona Beach Police officers outside the Icon One Apartments at One Daytona, according to police and body camera video. The 25-year-old man, Andy A. Mansilla, was taken  Halifax Health Medical Center, according to a police press release. On Thursday, officers responded to the Icon One Apartments inside One Daytona after a call at 9:51 p.m. about a domestic disturbance. Officers responded after one of the people who called 9-1-1 said two men were arguing in a parking lot off Legends Lane and one man had indicated he would “stab someone” if he saw police arrive, the release said.
