Here is a single-location mystery thriller from first-time feature screenwriter Christie LeBlanc which is more than a bit on the preposterous side. It requires some hefty levels of disbelief suspension and plausibility buy-in. But the excellent Mélanie Laurent (from Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds) sells it hard, and it’s a rather elegant contrivance, more restrained than usual from this director, the shlock-horror specialist Alexandre.

Oxygen does an admirable job of conveying a claustrophobic huis clos, by incorporating a sci-fi element in the form of a protagonist who suddenly awakens to find herself trapped in a cryogenic chamber, covered in electrodes and wrapped in a fabric cocoon which she must tear her way through with any means available to her (she’s held tight by a belt around her waist and has restraints around her feet) in order to breathe properly.
