picked up in frequency and intensity. stephanie elam is in colusa county. what is the stephen of the damage you are seeing? reporter: the damage is extensive. we know some 50 structures were damaged or demolished, half of those being homes just about. when you look at the evacuation area and see how many people are feated, you see this is no small undertaking. what they are doing is fighting this fire in many ways, with water by getting in there on the ground and also by fire. at least 21 major fires raging in california, fueled by lightning, gusty winds and low humidity. more than 9,000 firefighters on the ground and in the air, coordinating all available resources to battle the flames. the terms i m using is
the worst of them dubbed the rocky fire, 100 miles north of san francisco and it s only 5% contained. it s already destroyed two dozen homes and it s threatening thousands more. cnn s stephanie elam is live for us now in california with the latest. stephanie? hi, fred. yes, we are out here pretty much at a good intersection to take a look at what is happening here. you can see behind us we have cal fire trucks here. this is a staging area coming in from the fireline, some about to head out. this is a 24 hour production out here where they are constantly battling these flames because you can t stop. in fact, it was overnight a couple of nightsing that this fire exploded in size. that s rare because the humidity goes up at night, temperatures come down and normally that means fire activity slows down until those warmer daytime temperatures come along. that did not happen. this fire got larger and so they ve enlarged how much of the
