burned more than 93 square miles. reporter: it is a really big fire we re talking about, brianna. 60,000 acres, they say, have burned. they re also saying they have containment of 12%. but there is one big issue here for these firefighters and that s the weather. at least 21 major fires raging in california. fuelled by lightning, gusty winds, and low humidity. more than 9,000 firefighters on the ground and in the air coordinating all available resources to battle the flames. the term that i m using is historic. the reason i say that is there are firefighters that have 20, 25, 30 years on the job that have never seen fire behavior like we ve seen the last couple of days. reporter: the largest blaze, the rocky fire. it has torched some 60,000 acres in three counties just north of wine country. only 12% contained, california fire officials say at least
as we speak but we continue to hone in on this rocky fire because this is the most significant fire taking place at this moment. i ve been covering it all weekend. it started last wednesday but it has grown almost exponentially in size. it started at 5,000 and went to 17,000 and now at 54,000 acres. and here s why. you can see how mountainous this area is. it s difficult for the 3,000 firefighters to access the location. and the 250 fire engines trying to put out the flames of the spot fires that comprise the larger rocky fire. 54,000 acres burned. 5% containment and 6,000 structures threatened. and unfortunately the weather is not going to play along. sunny skies for the next three days. the winds still a concern. you think about all the valleys
it s the dry condition allowing the fires to grow at such an explosive rate. the rocky fire the largest fire of the year so far. well over 50,000 acres burned. we continue over the next couple of months will only get drier. the risk of the wild fires will only go higher. how thinly stretched are your resources right now trying to fight the flames? caller: as you can imagine with well over 9,000 firefighters on the front lines, we are incredibly busy. here in california governor brown signed a state of emergency. he gave us extra firefighters to battle this exact scenario. we brought in the california national guard. we have a lot of resources. is it enough? are the resources enough now that you have the governor declaring that state of emergency over the weekend which unlox some of the extra funds? caller: absolutely. we re aggressively attacking with resources that we have here. we also have more resources available to us that respond to
