Tell us where you are sitting right now. Good morning, john. Im at the consistentland experimental air station, which is located on a farm outside of blackburg, virginia, a beautiful location. Im sitting inside, so i cant see it, but beautiful rural location that weve been flying for about six or seven years. This site is one of six designated test sites around the country as they come up with registrationlations for Unmanned Systems. What is the focus of the work being conducted there at Virginia Tech, and how does it play into the regulatory effort . Our research is broad everything from control systems to the application for Unmanned Aircraft to uses like that, and as we move forward, its broader. An emotional anniversary today for a lot of people around the bay area. 25 years ago today, the loma prieta quake hit. Santa cruz was devastated. Abc 7 news cameraman clyde powell was the first to take us inside the crack that opened up in the nearby mountains at ground zero. Abc 7 News Reporter david louie joins us with more. Reporter very near where im standing 25 years ago, the loma prieta earthquake created a very large and dramatic chasm. It has been filled in and largely forgotten but there is still visible damage in downtown santa cruz. They gathered for a moment of silence to remember those who died. Only a few feet away, a hole in the ground remains after 25 years where a bookstore once stood. It collapsed, killing two employees of a coffee shop from the falling bricks. One of them was 21yearold shawn mccormick, seen in a family photo with his then 18 month old daughter amber. Shawns sister terry said the shock overwhelmed her and her mother. My mom collapsed.
