News from Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses
Rock on Wood was killed in the events feature race, the Harcourts sponsored Thorndon Mile, at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting at Trentham yesterday. He was six-years-old.
His death occurred whilst the Coalition of the Protection of Racehorses (CPR) was protesting outside the course, warning attendees about this very thing and holding signs stating
Harcourts Kills Horses.
“We are devastated to learn of the death of Rock On Wood but by no means surprised” said CPR Wellington spokesperson Frances Baker. “Horses are often killed on the racetrack due to being pushed too hard for gambling profits.”

Melody Belle has equalled Sunline s record of 13 Group One wins by a New Zealand horse with victory in Saturday s Thorndon Mile at Trentham.
The Jamie Richards-trained mare was expected to get the job done in her first-up run for the campaign, sent around as the $1.40 favourite.
While she was made to fight for the record-matching victory, Melody Belle s class shone through, taking out the Thorndon Mile by just over a length.

Champion jockey Opie Bosson is certain Melody Belle is ready to equal the greatest record in New Zealand racing history at Trentham on Saturday.
Melody Belle goes into the $200,000 Thorndon Mile on 12 Group 1 wins in her career, with iconic mare Sunline the only New Zealand-trained horse with more victories at the highest level, with 13.
So if Melody Belle can justify her $1.55 favouritism, she joins Sunline and has a shot at passing her at Te Rapa in two weeks.

Allan Sharrock had a welcome travelling companion as he clocked up thousands of kilometres up and down the North Island this week: a smile.
Sharrock was left beaming by Waisake s final serious piece of trackwork on Tuesday morning heading into the $250,000 Wellington Cup for which he is the $3.20 favourite.
That sounds remarkably short for a horse in an 18-horse 3200m Cup race but Waisake has dominated betting since he smashed a intermediate field carrying topweight at Trentham two weeks ago.
He drops to 53kg with two-time Auckland Cup winner Samantha Collett aboard and even has the added bonus of drawing barrier four so the preparation could hardly have gone better.
