Allan Sharrock had a welcome travelling companion as he clocked up thousands of kilometres up and down the North Island this week: a smile.
Sharrock was left beaming by Waisake s final serious piece of trackwork on Tuesday morning heading into the $250,000 Wellington Cup for which he is the $3.20 favourite.
That sounds remarkably short for a horse in an 18-horse 3200m Cup race but Waisake has dominated betting since he smashed a intermediate field carrying topweight at Trentham two weeks ago.
He drops to 53kg with two-time Auckland Cup winner Samantha Collett aboard and even has the added bonus of drawing barrier four so the preparation could hardly have gone better.

New Zealand is renowned as one of the world’s happiest hunting grounds for female jockeys - and that’s never been more the case than it is now. Of course, when you consider the quality of riders like Danielle Johnson, Lisa Allpress and Samantha Collett, it’s hardly surprising.
The three have had the NZ Premiership between them for the past four seasons, and their domination is even more pronounced for 20/21. Indeed, 29-year-old Johnson has all but won the title already - and we’re still not quite halfway through the season. She passed the hundred mark with a four-timer at Trentham on Saturday, and is now on 105, a lead of 59 over Craig Grylis on 46 (just three ahead of Allpress and Collett, who are tied for third).

One of New Zealand s top jockeys is facing serious criminal charges after appearing in court on allegations he made threats, including one to kill, against two of the country s leading racing figures.
Multiple Grade 1-winning rider Jason Waddell, 34, did not enter a plea to charges that he posted a digital communication with intent to cause harm to Te Akau Racing boss David Ellis and made a threat to kill Waikato Racing Club chief executive Andrew Castles.
Waddell was bailed to reappear at Hamilton District Court in the New Year.
