GRADY COUNTY, Ga. - Officials are condemning an act of vandalism to a south Georgia historical marker about baseball legend and civil rights pioneer Jackie Robinson.
The Georgia Historical Society, a not-for-profit institution that administrates the state s historic markers, says the vandals targeted a marker highlighting the birthplace of Jackie Robinson, the first Black player in Major League Baseball. Jackie Robinson is one of Georgia’s most famous native sons and is justly lauded not only for breaking baseball’s color barrier, opening the door for others like Henry Aaron to follow, but also for his civil rights activism beyond the baseball field, said Dr. W. Todd Groce, the president and CEO of the Georgia Historical Society.
