As you can see behind me, several parts of downtown are now considered crime scenes as authorities try piecing together what they call a coordinated attack on Police Officers. Reporter Dallas Police say officers were ambushed thursday night when snipers opened fire on police during a protest downtown. [ gunfire ] reporter people ran for their lives. Its almost like the gunshots were coming at us. Reporter officers used patrol cars to take cover. We know that rifles were used to injure and kill dallas officers and a dart officer. Reporter 11 officers were shot, five died, including Brent Thompson the firstever dart officer killed in the line of duty. Another dart officer misty mcbride was shot in the arm.
