Outlawed My favorite literary experiences are genre-bending works that defy categorization but it s a bonus when books turn out to be gender-benders, too, blurring the binaries past man, woman, straight, gay. Take the poem Witch-Wife by Edna St. Vincent Millay. It begins in the voice of someone, presumably a man, adding up a woman s charms in the style of a folk ballad: She learned her hands in a fairy-tale,/And her mouth on a valentine. Two stanzas later, the poem becomes a feminist, possibly lesbian manifesto: But she was not made for any man,/And she never will be all mine.
