djohnson@mojonews.com LISBON A 40-year-old Salem man described his own actions as “juvenile” during a plea and sentencing hearing in Common Pleas Court on Wednesday. William D. Barrett, East Fifth Street, pleaded guilty to vandalism, a fourth-degree felony, after he and another inmate at the county jail were caught throwing recreational basketballs at cameras at the county jail on March 9, 2020. “It was a very juvenile act,” Barrett told Judge Megan Bickerton while apologizing for his actions prior to sentencing. “Me in my right mind wouldn’t throw basketballs at cameras at the county jail.” Barrett’s defense attorney, Jennifer Gorby, said Barrett had three other cases in 2019, all within a four-month period and all while he was using methamphetamines at the time. On the highest felony, complicity to burglary, Barrett was sentenced to at least four years and six months in prison with the possibility of more time.
