welcome back to news nation. moments ago, the white house again called ford nonviolent transition to democracy in egypt. robert gibb is stressing egypt needs to hold cred ibl presidential elections but the white house is not taking a position on whether mubarak should be on the ballot. the united states government does not determine who is on the ballot. the question is whether or not elections are free and fair. that s what we would weigh in on and weigh in on strongly. let s bring in newsweek magazine middle east editor and paris bureau chief, christopher dicky, trying to make his way to egypt. we were with you in studio friday. what is your assessment of what we ve seen since friday to this morning? well, i think what we ve seen is that the protesters have felt
people want and the white house wants. can you explain why the white house is not taking a position? well, ben, it is not up to us to determine when the grievances of the egyptian people have been met by the egyptian government. we have said all along that there are, as i mentioned, legitimate concerns and grievances had by the egyptian people for a long time. the need for freedom to associate, freedom to communicate over the internet, freedom to assemble, the freedom of speech, and that those must be addressed in a substantive way by the egyptian government. but we re not picking between those on the street and those in the government. as the secretary of state said yesterday, we have enumerated our concern for the people of egypt. you say it s up to the egyptian people. is it fair and accurate toy-t s it is the saying of the white house you do not want any kind of transition to be through the toppling of existing headed of state, it should be resignation or election?
