we begin this morning with laying down the law. john boehner and his fellow republicans flexed their majority muscles bypassing new rules and promising big changes. brian moore is on capitol hill with details. brian, good morning to you. reporter: good morning, veronica. republicans are promising to stick to the constitution and the not so subtle message is that democrats didn t. so help you god? i do. reporter: the 112th congress began on a sweet note. god bless you, speaker boehner. reporter: but it turned bitter and partisan awfully fast. conspiracy that, didn t take long. our republican friends have been in charge of the house for about an hour and already they re up to their old discredited tricks. reporter: before voting on new house rules designed to make spending cuts easier the resolution is adopted. reporter: democrats sounded like budget hawks. add to virgining deficits and debt. reporter: even as they get set to fight gop plans to slash
under republican control. insurance companies hiking rates by 60%, transplant candidates, dying, because of extremist budget cuts. and the congressional bchlk budget office says the gop repeal planned add $230 billion to the deficit. mr. boehner, are you listening? and folks this is not a joke. michele bachmann has been named to the house intelligence committee. i think that she s serious about running in 2012 not for the congressional district but for the white house. the huffington post roy sekoff weighs in on that tonight and some of boehner s boys, they re off to a pretty rocky start in the house. they voted without having taken the oath of office and that, my friends is against the constitution. they claim to love. we ve got all of that coming up. but the hot story off of the top, the story that has me fired up, is president obama, i think, has a golden opportunity to make things right with the base. today, he announced his new choice for chief of staff, former c
daley had opposed the financial reform bill and opposed the president s health care bill. we re going to hear from secretary daley. he was the commerce secretary during the first clinton administration, presumably when the president introduces him at 2:30. maybe we ll get clarification on that. here s an individual who s well known among democrats and well known in the business community. not so well known by president obama himself. it s interesting, both men are from chicago. they had a series of meetings, most recently yesterday when the president decided this morning that daley was going to be the pick to be the new white house chief of staff. it s been called the second most important job in washington after the president. he s a gate keeper and adviser and coo at the white house. bill daley will be the next chief of staff. mike, we ll bring the breaking news as soon as the president walks out with bill daley. thanks, we ll bring you the president s announcement at msn
