Im head of Government Relations and Public Policy at wells fargo and im pleased to be here with you today. Were pleased to serve for the 8th year as a charter sponsor of the book festival and even prouder to watch it grow into the incredibly popular and impactful event it has become. I wouldnt be surprised [ applause ] thank you. I wouldnt be surprised to see us move the needle on some best seller lists today. But its even more important to keep the book festival a free event that serves the community. Its real purpose is literacy which leads to learning and opportunity which helps our goal in succeeding. Learning to love books is what the book festival is all about. In this session, ron chernow will describe his biography and certain other popular founding fathers. Lets look at the relationship between war and art, harold. Does war stimulate arts in america, and did art change the romantic image of war . Harold i think both. Good evening. Thanks for having me back. I think the great emphasis of american painting to the civil war was probably landscape painting. Portrait caricatures took on a martial air with all the military heroes who were portrayed. But it sent many to the field, like the soldier artists. Artists like Winslow Homer went to the field to do sketches for the weekly newspapers and evolved into very successful artists. But in terms of what it did to landscaping, it totally revolutionized the romantic attitude artists had toward this socalled american eden, the pristine landscape of the americas. Conversation in this series that argues that objects have the power to convey historical events and to help us understand the passed. This idea inspired Harold Holzer book, the civil war in 50 objects. The objects which were taken from the New York Historical society. This evening, we will be looking at five objects from the book and related Exhibition Group surrounding the theme of art of war. So these works are all very different and have very different background stories. We have the return of the 69th irish regiment. A caricature of lincoln writing the emancipation proclamation. Efforts to conciliate. Known as washington and lee university. What were gonna do today ladies and gentlemen as what we are going to do robert italy and the post war years. My coworker when we were upstairs before asked me if this was going to be a beatific asian did i get that were right . I guess it never hit me but i guess it might in a way. I am a big fan of robert e. Lee. What im hoping to do among others besides give you a timeline about what robert haley did in the post years, which i think is obviously one of the most overlooked portion of his life. Civil war is always going to be first and foremost. The other main theme of this lecture im going to try to get across tea. Park services is big on themes.
