As I start writing this column, this year’s NFL conference championship games have not occurred yet. I think that is for the best for now, since I do not have to deal with possible heartbreak, just hope, though I should not hold out that much.
Last year, I wrote about how for pretty much the first time in my life, I was looking forward for this year’s Buffalo Bills season, and boy has that hope paid off. Not only did the Bills have their best season in my lifetime with a 13-3 record, which should have been 14-2 if not for a Hail Mary against the Cardinals, it was their best season since the great Super Bowl teams of the early 90’s.

Creenan: All I want for New Year s is some quiet

In one of the many Muppets Christmas specials, a human character named Doc bemoans Fozzie’s mother for wanting a nice quiet Christmas away from the Muppets before realizing how fun everyone there can be. There have been plenty of times I have felt that way about wanting a quiet holiday to myself, but moreso with New Year’s.
Every year for my family it seemed like there was always something exciting that had to happen for New Year’s. The Buffalo Sabres for the longest time would play a game on either New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, which included the first Winter Classic in 2008 against the Pittsburgh Penguins. There was the time the University of Buffalo’s football team played its first bowl game ever in the Skydome in Toronto. Or at least that’s what kind of things would happen when I was not coerced into watching Twilight Zone marathons with my mother.

A few months ago, I wrote a column about one of my neighbors had fallen down the stars and I tried to help him back up before an ambulance had to come to take him to a hospital. Well I was informed a few weeks ago from the other neighbor that helped out that he passed around Thanksgiving-time.
From what I was told, that man did not die as a direct result from the fall, though there must have been some internal bleeding. He went to Lapeer County for treatment, but he eventually died after falling into a coma. I was also told whatever family he had was not that particularly close to him, but I eventually saw someone seeing if his truck was still working in the parking lot, whom I could only assume was a relative.
