The Root s Clapback Mailbag: We Have Questions

While I’m generally known for my quiet, kind-hearted demeanor and as someone who accepts racism quietly and would never push back when someone else says or does something stupid or racist, beneath this placid, compassionate exterior lies a heart that constantly asks the same question over and over again. (Why are you laughing? I know I’m viewed as a pushover. I’m very self-aware.)

One of my dreams is to interview someone like Tucker Carlson, Donald Trump or Candace Owens on live television. In this hallucination, I have a ream of prepared notes from which I pull all my questions. And, as they regurgitate the predictable talking points, I shuffle through my index cards to find the perfect follow-up question. After asking the reciprocal question, I stare intently while they answer my inquiry, which is always the same:

On Wednesday night, President Joe Biden will address Congress and reportedly unveil a $1.8 trillion plan to aid social welfare and family assistance programs that will try and do the heavy job of lifting America out of poverty.

The American Families Plan would look to invest some $200 billion in “universal prekindergarten and more than $100 billion in free community college. It would extend the expanded child tax credit through 2025 and ensure that the benefit is more accessible to low-income families by making it permanently refundable. And it would set aside $225 billion to create the country’s first national paid family and medical leave program,” Politico reports.

A 23-year-old brotha in a New York City suburb just wanted to clock into work and earn a living. Instead, he was greeted with racial harassment and, most recently, a noose hanging from his workspace.

The incident happened on April 20 at Cooper Power & Lighting Corp in Farmingdale, N.Y., in Suffolk County, Long Island. Kyrin Taylor has been working at the local business since December. The noose was hanging clear as day and, no, you cannot mistake it for anything other than a noose, in case anyone wants to explain it away as an accident.
Fearing for his personal safety, Taylor called the police and his union, IBEW Local 25, to inform it of the situation, according to his lawyer, Frederick Brewington.
