Beginning at 6:30 a.m. Friday, Caltrans will reopen this portion of roadway using a 24/7 signalized traffic control system to provide temporary unrestricted flow with one-way alternating access for vehicles in both directions.
No one knows why or who first put the chairs in the water. They just know that at one point, someone sitting by the banks of the Big Sur River took an Adirondack chair from the hotel’s furnishings and put it right into the current. Lounging in one, with your bare feet resting on the smooth rocks as the cool river water washes over them, is now something that’s a decades-old tradition at the Big Sur River Inn. If you didn’t do it during your stay, you might as well have not stayed there at all.
