Artist Richard C. “Dick” Elliott (1945-2008) is known for his large installations created with industrial highway reflectors. As seen in his recently restored work “Circle of Light” around the top
YAKIMA â The largest public artwork in Washingtonâs state art collection needs restoration, and supporters are seeking funds to bring a massive ribbon of reflectors back to its original radiance.
The cost to restore the âCircle of Lightâ on the Yakima Valley SunDome by the late artist Richard C. âDickâ Elliott of Ellensburg is estimated at $508,000. Staff with the Washington State Arts Commission, known as ArtsWA, and the Central Washington Fair Association provided an update on progress of the restoration in an online meeting earlier this month.
Legislators from the Yakima Valley cautioned that getting funding from a state facing shortfalls in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic will be difficult. Though theyâre among the many fans of the SunDome artwork, they also said the effort may have to happen in two parts instead of one.
