Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa has congratulated nine candidates, most of them belonging to the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP), for winning the Parliamentary and Council Ward by-elections that took place on Tuesday, March 30, 2021.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) held parliamentary and council by-elections in seven constituencies and two wards across the country.

Estranged Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vice president in the Southern Region, Kondwani Nankhumwa, on Sunday March 14, 2021 concluded a three-day exhaustive campaign tour of Mulanje, Nsanje and Chikwawa ahead of the March 30, 2021 by-elections, urging the people to vote for DPP candidates to ensure genuine social and economic development.
Nankhumwa stormed Nsanje North constituency to drum up support for the DPP parliamentary candidate, Esther Mcheka Chilenje.

Chiefs in Mulanje have been advised not to impose candidates on their subjects for the Chitakale Ward by-election slated for March 30 2021.

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) director for media and public relations, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, said this on Saturday during an orientation meeting with the chiefs at Lauderdale Primary School on their roles to contribute to a successful election process.
Said Mwafulirwa: “As leaders, you (chiefs) have to mobilise people to come out in large numbers to vote for the councillor of their choice. Give equal chances to the candidates to campaign in your areas. You may be at any political rally to highlight the importance of the election, but not imposing or campaigning for anyone.”
