LAST week’s mystery building was the Fountaine Hospital Almshouse, overlooking the village green in Linton, as correctly identified by Phillip Ridge, Clifford Meehan , Michael Townson and Teresa and Philip Winstanley. Clifford comments: “In my earlier years I used to wonder what such a large building was doing in the middle of a small village, I enquired at the bar in the Fountaine Inn and was given a history lesson.” In 2018, Jane Houlton cast new light on the almshouse with the publication of her book, An Almshouse for Linton, in which she asked the question - just who was the architect of the fine, Baroque building?
