Production in India, the world s largest rice exporter, is under unusually intense focus after New Delhi banned exports of non-basmati white rice in July, sending global prices surging.
Non-basmati white rice constitutes about 25 per cent of total rice exported from the country. India accounts for 40 per cent of global rice exports, but in the last few months, the country has prioritised domestic demand over global demands.

The government on Sunday said that it has decided not to allow exports of basmati rice below $1,200 per tonne to restrict possible “illegal” shipment of white non-basmati rice in the garb of premium basmati rice, IANS reported. In a statement, the commerce ministry said it has directed trade promotion body APEDA not to register contracts below $1,200 per tonne.
