jenna: back to chile today and it still brings a smile to your face knowing that the 33 miners got out alive. this press conference that is taking place right now is the rescuers, the ones that were standing around some of the mine there, also the ones that went down. we heard that the man, manual gonzalez the first man to go down in the rescue capsule and the last one to come up will be speaking. i m not sure if he s there. i seem to recognize him there as one of the men standing around. but it s tough to tell. geraldo rivera will be joining us to talk about the untold stories of the miners. we will be joining us shortly. we ll see you in a few minutes.
with open arms. we don t care what country you are from, if you have something to help us please bring it. reporter: rescuers were aided by a canadian oil drill, top drillers from the u.s. nasa, a cable from germany, so the capsule won t spin, help from argentina, south africa. there is no exact parallel to the predicament the men are in. the closest may be the long isolation of astronauts. chile invites four nasa doctors. they consult on psychology and nutrition. they say chile has broken frontiers here. there will not only be a case study in medicine, mining and businesses as well. they were innovative how they got supplies and logistics down to the miners. at the same time they had to devise a plan to get the men out. sure a rescue capsule was used in the rescue in pennsylvania 2002, but that was 230 feet down. this was ten times deeper. it was in part the failure of government oversight that caused this mining disaster but it was the swift and efficient response of the chil
mine. and that really has led his companions, as you mentioned, to call him jokingly in the videos they ve sent up dr. house after the u.s. tv series. but it is he who helped carry out the blood test and urine tests. he s checked the daily vital signs and been in charge of the tape measure to make sure that the burliest miners slim down fast enough to fit inside the fenix 2 rescue capsule. we can see because things have gone off without a hitch that he has done a great job. we ve seen those miners coming up in what seemed to have been an amazing state of health. and a lot of that is all down to chile s own dr. house, yonni barrios. the health minister said we ll have to get him an express doctor s certificate and others echoed that feeling but like a lot of the miners these people
working to get to these miners, each one racing the other. it was the plan b drill, which ultimately got there, american technicians actually operating that drill, one of whom was brought in from afghanistan. we ll talk to them a little bit later or not in this hour. they didn t actually stick around to witness it. they wanted to go back to santiago and watch it on tv like everybody else. they wanted this moment to be for the chilean people, the family members, the friends, the colleagues and all the mine officials who have been there working around the clock. as karl indicated, when the capsule, when the phoenix capsule is close to the surface, a siren will sound. that will happen every time each of the 33 miners is brought up, letting people far and wide know that one of their miners has
when they were found alive it could take until christmas to drill down to them. and then they put a plan together, not only one plan, a plan a., but then they put two the aactive plans together to see if they could get down there further. and it was the plan b drill, a drill normally used for drilling water holes that made it down to the miners first. and then as well, the whole time line of the rescue itself has been telescoped. and last night we saw them tinkering with the rescue capsule, we thought there may be a glitch there, they were just making sure the wheels were running smoothly on the capsule. and since then, there hasn t been a hitch. they haven t suffered any damage to the fenix rescue capsule, everything is running fine and ahead of schedule. karl, we ll continue to check in with you, a good description of what s going on. karl is there with our team, and in the bottom right of the screen you can see the chilean mining minister giving an update. we will bring you any ne
