that didn t matter much. here you have a sequester but is it not about a full faith and credit discussion. but if you re a democrat who wants to scare people or to make them fearful of this situation or to deemonnize republicans, you will work very hard to conflate those two issues and make people thing they re the same. neil: thank you very much. we want to remind you again you do not default with the government shutting down you default when you can t make good on an interest payment to u.s. bond investors. that happened then katy bar the door. that has not happened nor will it anytime soon. everybody folked on what may shut down to midnight tonight. is anything looking at the longer list of things that will not in/ well, there s hannah, maddie, jen, sara m., sara b., sa whoa, whoa. hold on. (under his breath) here it comes.
the veterans, the people who have been up here for a long time. they realize the republicans were blamed for that. right or wrong, but that s the takeaway from that crisis. so there are a number of republicans up here who think ultimately their allies will cave after there is a government shutdown for a few days. because the company who may be dipping in and out of coverage may hold the republicans accountable. i m not predicting that, but all eyes are on what the president will say. whether he will pour gasoline on the situation or whether he will say time is running out and we ve got to do something and maybe he ll come up with some sort of counteroffer. we ll see. again, folks have been talking all day, seem pretty pessimistic, because there does not seem to be active negotiation under way at this hour. the debt ceiling matters a lot more to folks than this little brinksmanship game. because that one risks the credit rating of the united states which only was downgraded
thing is coming down and you re not going to like it. well, that s true. and the republicans have already appealed to their base by the votes they have taken. so senator cruz appealed to be people that are attracted to him and what he has to say by doing 21-hour long speech on the floor of the senate. so they have already won that aspect of this whole process. they ve put their opinions on the record. neil: as an historian, jane, i always think that the mainstream media has a very different view of who is stubborn. you re republicans and disturb bornly insist on controlling spending, you re an obstructionist. if you re a democrat and block controlling spendingor, spending, you re not. dot does that get old and people say, that might have been the view in the moment but longer term it s not reality?
and so a lot of questions at this point. but it really is striking, the fact that there are not discussions going on at this point. senator harry reid seems to feel like whatever, you know, they re offering, if they go anywhere near the health care law, it is no deal whatsoever. there seeps to be some low hanging fruit, but every suggestion that the house sends over, we talked to reid s aides, and they say dead on arrival, including this latest one about the individual mandate. and also about the exemptions for parts of washington. they don t want any part of it. they feel like they have the strength. they ll try to teach republicans a lesson with this. we ll see what the impact is, assuming that continues to be the thinking going forward into this evening. amazing. thank you very much. if you could just stick around there, just let you know what s happening. the mrpresident s running behin the schedule here. he was supposed to address the nation for a brief statement where he stan
couldn t would you ever make it a case where the obama administration would do that? because you wouldn t let that on your watch, would you? no, and look, we ve had already one humiliating credit downgrade on this president s watch. i don t put anything past this administration given what we ve seen over last five years but what he s banking on in this game of chicken, he refuses to compromise on anything. he is banking on a corrupt media in this country covering for him. you ask me what i expect to hear from him in moments. i expect to hear from him more, i will not negotiate, and more blame on the republicans. he s teeing up his lackeys in the media to go and do the work on this. when they ve been out there, even in the middle of the night, proposing negotiations. they were elected to represent their folks too, who hate obama care. they have a responsibility to those folks as well by the way, both sides have
