we appreciate that. if you get something, let us know. we ll put you right back on the air. i want to get back to rebecca berg, david rohde and brian fallon. my question, david is honestly, i get it. this is politics. this is washington. it s fine. play the blame game. but at this moment when americans are like, what is going to happen? this government is going to shut down. most people are like they don t really know it s the weekend and what effect it s going to have. so they re concerned. don t they want to hear from the president, and don t they want some re-insuranassurance that eg is going to be okay instead of the blame game? why? i think the messaging will grate on people. is it going to be the trump shutdown, that hashtag, or the schumer shutdown. this is an opportunity for the president to show some leadership, but this is no surprise that he s not getting into the nitty-gritty of a deal. he s never done that. the tax cut, the repeal of obamacare, the white house was
2013, republicans thought in the house they might have red state democrats over a barrel. none of them broke rank. when republicans last year pitched a repeal of obamacare. none of the red state democrats that are up for reelection this year broke rank. tax reform, none broke ranks. today we saw five red state democrats break ranks. so it tells you their position on the shut down is a little bit less unified than the past. they have political concerns that this could go sideways. yeah. the question is, you think about a year ago, everybody, you know what we were dealing with a year ago, tomorrow. this is the largest inaugural crowd to be watched by period. in this political environment where there s so much news in the news cycle spins so fast. are people going to remember this in 2018? we ll talk about that when we come back.
everybody can work around what he believes and corral the vote. and get it done. if not we will end up like we did with the repeal of obamacare. failure. can i say one thing in defense of the president? real quick. he is hamstringing republicans by just what you said. by not having a will the of credibility. so when senator schumer goes back the caucus can say did you really strike a deal with the president? what s working for the president is that he is up to about 40% in approval right now. he was only at 45% approval a year ago. he s got overwhelmingly most of the voters are still with him. he has more than three quarters of republicans still with him chl the bottom hasn t fallen out. he knows that. and that s something that democrats have to watch out. the bottom hasn t fallen out. so, i mean, okay. everybody stay with me.
well, the infrastructure, when mitch mcconnell talks about and even donald trump talks about bipartisanship, it s hysterical to hear that, especially when you look at mitch mcconnell who has used special procedure to make sure reconciliation, to make sure that democrats were not part of passing not passing well, pushing their gop tax plan and also with the repeal of obamacare. they used reconciliation because they didn t want democrats involved. so to talk about partisanship is just crazy and also this is the same person who held, as we know, the supreme court seat for over a year, and then also during the obama years, who said, you know what, the one thing that i want to make sure is that obama is a one-term president. so there s they haven t shown anything that leads to bipartisanship. and you have donald trump who attacks democrats whenever he has a chance. so i just don t see that happening. and the number one thing that democrats need to continue to do
consequential 13 day stretch six months into the presidency. it started on july 19th when president trump expressed deep frustration about attorney general jeff sessions decision to recuse himself from the russia investigation. the relationship is still sour. the next day after a meeting between president trump and his advisers, secretary of state rex tillerson reportedly referred to the president as a quote, moron. the following day anthony the mooch scaramucci joined the trump administration and blew a kiss apparently in pro test sean spicer quit. july 26th paul manafort was raided. the next day anthony scaramucci s profanity laced interview and john mccain gives his thumbs down with the repeal of obamacare.
