Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities
Congratulations to Ricky Coulthard, the first 2021 winner for Territory Families, Housing and Communities’ Pride in Your Place (PIYP) awards.
PIYP is a monthly award to recognise public housing tenants who take pride in their home and yard.
Mr Coulthard’s home was deemed a winner due to his lush green front lawn, an honourable achievement this time of year in Alice Springs.
Remote and urban tenants are eligible to win a monthly prize of a $200 gift card and certificate signed by the Minister for Territory Families and Urban Housing or the Minister for Remote Housing and Town Camps, dependent on the tenant’s location.
· Murray River North.
Having committed to a 42 per cent Aboriginal employment target, contractors will design, construct and install the housing while residents have had input into the types of housing in their communities through the Local Decision Making process.
The houses, which are modular designs, provide an alternative to on-site construction and offer flexibility in delivery and ongoing transportability.
More than 130 homes funded by a previous $68 million investment in this model of housing are now rolling out to 24 remote communities across the NT.
The project is funded under the HomeBuild program as part of the Territory Labor Government’s $1.1 billion Remote Housing Package – Our Communities. Our Future. Our Homes. The Australian Government committed a $550 million co-contribution towards the program in 2019.

The Northern Territory Government is using prefabricated homes to ease overcrowding in remote communities, but some are concerned they take construction jobs and training opportunities from Aboriginal Territorians living in remote areas.
Key points:
The NT Government says it has completed 37 of the new-style remote homes and more are on the way
Some residents are happy and the houses can be finished quicker than locally built homes
Concerns have been raised over the cost of the homes, at around half a million dollars each
