New officers of IBP Cebu City elected

SunStar + February 27, 2021 SINCE 2010, five lawyers have run for the presidency of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Cebu City and all of them won because their candidacies were uncontested. The IBP Cebu City Chapter, which currently has more than 2,000 members, proclaimed its newly elected set of officers during a nationwide chapter elections on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2021. The officers will serve for two years. The new president is lawyer Michelle Palmares, who had served the IBP Cebu City Board of Officers in various capacities for 21 years. She had no opponents in the election. She will replace the current president, lawyer Regal Oliva, who also ran unopposed in 2019.

Ground zero in killings The lawyers noted that Cebu province is ground zero of the rash of killings, noting that 14 of our brethren have been killed since 2004. In 2020 alone, they said, two lawyers were killed. One media count placed the death toll, the group said, at 55 since 2016 across the country, the latest being the January 14 murder in Malaybalay Ciy, Bukidnon.

Arrest of ex-PDEA director hired to kill Wee to fast-track probe on murder

January 18, 2021 THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is now in possession of electronic evidence that will help identify the mastermind behind the murder of lawyer Joey Luis Wee. NBI 7 Director Renan Oliva said cellular phones were recovered from retired Colonel Edwin Layese, the alleged contractor hired to execute the murder of Wee last November. Layese was arrested by NBI 7 agents in Cebu City on Jan. 13, 2021. He was a former director of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in Western Visayas and a former member of the Philippine Army. He is currently a security officer of a business establishment at the Cebu Business Park.

PNP: 4 suspects in Ole s death

SunStar + December 19, 2020 LOCAL police in Danao City now have four suspects considered “persons of interest” in the ambush-slay of lawyer Baby Maria Concepcion Landero-Ole. Maj. Ma. Theresa Macatangay, Danao City police chief, said aside from the gunman and the driver of the getaway vehicle, two other people on board a white van accompanied the two suspects and served as “spotters.” Macatangay said witnesses at the crime scene saw the white van speeding off after the two assailants gunned down Ole. Ole was on her way to Liloan town after attending a hearing when she was gunned down in Barangay Looc, Danao City on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2020.
