Reform campaigners blast reports on judicial scandal

Judicial reform advocates and lawmakers yesterday criticized reports on alleged bribe-taking, abuse of authority, and other misconduct by judges and prosecutors in a corruption scandal involving business tycoon Weng Mao-chung (翁茂鍾) and former Supreme Court judge Shih Mu-chin (石木欽).
The Judicial Reform Foundation and New Power Party (NPP) legislators said that the reports presented on Wednesday by the Judicial Yuan and the Ministry of Justice about the scandal concealed information to shield high-ranking members of the judiciary.
Judicial Reform Foundation chairman Lin Yung-sung (林永頌), and NPP legislators Chiu Hsien-chih (邱顯智) and Chen Jiau-hua (陳椒華) told a news conference in Taipei that they were disappointed with the content of the reports into the results of a second-stage investigation into the scandal.

Platform launched to aid lay judges

Judicial reform advocates yesterday launched a “National Judge Information Platform” to provide guidance and assist people who become part of a proposed lay judge system.
The platform has compiled case documents gathered from district courts and would add feedback from participating lay judges to add to assessments by observers and legal practitioners, Judicial Reform Foundation chairman Lin Yung-sung (林永頌) said.
“It is to help people now involved in the simulation court trials that the Judicial Yuan is running nationwide, preparing them for the official implementation of the lay judge system in two years,” Lin told a news conference in Taipei alongside Taiwan Jury Association director Chen Wei-shyang (陳為祥) and representatives from the Taiwan Youth Association for Democracy and the Taiwan Labor Front.
Judicial corruption demands action

Were it not for the Control Yuan, the massive judicial scandal involving allegations of corruption by former Supreme Court judge Shih Mu-chin (石木欽) and Chia Her Industrial president Weng Mao-chung (翁茂鍾) would have remained buried deep in multiple “black boxes.”
However, there is another important aspect to the story that is worthy of attention.
If Control Yuan members appointed by former president Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) are not cleared out, even if the agency initiates impeachment proceedings against the more than 200 judicial personnel and civil servants accused of having been involved in illicit activities, nothing will happen.
