Judge to decide disposal of false imprisonment charge

Oxford Crown Court A judge will decide in September how best to deal with a man who attacked others and held them against their will. Thomas Ryan, 26, formerly of Weald Street, Bampton, was ruled unfit to stand trial at Oxford Crown Court last week. And this week jurors found that he had committed two assaults by beating and a charge of false imprisonment. He was found not guilty of a third assault. The incident happened at Bampton, Oxfordshire, in May 2019. On Friday, Recorder Michael Roques heard that Ryan’s mental health had improved and a doctor at HMP Bullingdon did not believe he required in-patient care at a psychiatric hospital.

His barrister, Catherine Zara Walker, said mental health reports were being prepared by the defence. The court heard he had suffered an injury in another crash.

Drink driver swore at police during Witney car chase

Jonathan Simmonds (in white shirt) outside Oxford Crown Court A drink driver flashed his middle finger at the police officers who were pursuing him through Witney. Jonathan Simmonds, 56, hit speeds of 50 to 60mph in 30 zones, went through red lights and drove on the wrong side of the road during the chase on the evening of May 14, 2021. When he was later interviewed by a probation officer for a pre-sentence report, he was said to have claimed the police ‘fabricated facts around the offending’ and felt he hadn’t driven dangerously. Imposing a two year community order, Recorder Michael Roques said it would have been ‘all too easy’ for Simmonds to have hit another motorist as he jumped red lights – warning him he could have been in the dock for causing death by dangerous driving.

Prosecutors claimed Ezekiel Tommy Amusan and Mickaydel Israel Ayee had squared up to their alleged victim – a historian in Oxford for a conference in July 2019 – and asked ‘what he had for them’ then said he had a nice watch. But the two young men – both still under-18 when the incident happened – denied the alleged robbery bid. Oxford Crown Court heard they had challenged the Austrian historian after he had ‘barged’ past them as they walked down Cricket Road, Cowley, on their way to a party on July 12, 2019.
