U-Haul Reusing Hartford Building for Climate-Controlled Storage

Share this article Share this article HARTFORD, Conn., April 12, 2021 /PRNewswire/  U-Haul® plans to use its ecofriendly adaptive reuse program to transform the former Capitol Archives & Record Storage building in Hartford into a contemporary self-storage facility at 618 Capitol Ave. U-Haul Storage of Capitol Ave. will encompass a four-story building with 87,387 square feet of space. The property, acquired on March 25, sits on nearly three-quarters of an acre. Once the building is repurposed and renovated, it will offer a range of self-storage rooms with high-tech security features at affordable price points. Climate-controlled units will be available. Renovations are expected to be completed this summer.

U-Haul parent buys Hartford s Capitol Archives property for $1 1M

The parent company of moving and storage rental giant U-Haul has paid $1.1 million for the longtime Hartford home of Capitol Archives and Record Storage. According to property records, Arizona-based Amerco Real Estate Co. bought the highly visible 618 Capitol Ave. and a smaller adjacent property at 139 Laurel St. on March 31 from owner Frank Valente, proprietor of Capitol Archives, which was founded in 1981. Neither Valente nor Amerco responded to requests for comment about the sale. The Capitol Avenue property owed $468,786 in back taxes, which were paid to the city on March 25, according to Hartford Tax Collector Nancy Raich.
