The Maharashtra government has authorized the MHADA to undertake redevelopment of dilapidated cessed buildings in Mumbai if the society and owner fail to appoint a developer within six months. MHADA has also been authorized to take over redevelopment projects that have been delayed for more than two to three years. There are several such stalled redevelopment projects in Mumbai and many people living in transit accommodations. This notice may be the start of many more projects being taken over by the MHADA
MBRRB has also sent show cause notices to 67 other projects that have obtained No Objection Certificate (NOC) in the past 10 years for carrying out redevelopment
As far as relocation of these residents is concerned, CM Shinde also gave the directive on a structural audit when he was informed by the BMC that it had shifted tenants from 27 of the 226 buildings which were declared unsafe
