A collection of cherised Christmas memories and beloved traditions Cork County Older People’s Council has published an anthology of festive stories, Memories of a Real Cork Christmas, collating Christmas memories from older citizens across the county. This unique collection contains stories and history from the 1940s onwards. The stories were collated and published as part of “A Real Cork Christmas”, an initiative of Cork County Council. The collection of stories covers life in the four corners of Ireland’s largest county and promises to preserve a trove of Christmas traditions and childhood memories for future generations. Under the umbrella of Cork County Council’s ‘A Real Cork Christmas’ initiative, the Cork County Age Friendly Programme invited members of Cork County Older People’s Council to send their stories of Christmas Traditions and Childhood memories of Christmas.

The resilience, flexibility and adaptability of the Council working alongside statutory bodies, volunteer organisations, families and communities enabled us to respond effectively to these challenges, while paving the way for future success in the region. Prior to the global pandemic in March, Cork County Council made international news in its response to the grounding of the ghost ship MV Alta on the coast of Ballycotton.

A real Cork Christmas

Castlemagner Community Development Association was delighted to be included in the Cork County Council initiative A Real Cork Christmas which was launched to support communities and businesses in this challenging year. Locals welcomed the gift of two beautiful Christmas trees which are the festive focal point in Castlemagner and Cecilstown. Speaking on behalf of the community, Hazel Bourke said: The trees have added a festive glow with their simple white lights and are much admired by both young and old. It s been a long time since the villages were decorated as a community, so it s even more special in this challenging year. A heartfelt thanks to Liz, Jim, Ollie, Jerry and team from Cork County Council who were so helpful in supplying these beautiful glittering trees .
