A collection of cherised Christmas memories and beloved traditions
Cork County Older People’s Council has published an anthology of festive stories, Memories of a Real Cork Christmas, collating Christmas memories from older citizens across the county.
This unique collection contains stories and history from the 1940s onwards. The stories were collated and published as part of “A Real Cork Christmas”, an initiative of Cork County Council.
The collection of stories covers life in the four corners of Ireland’s largest county and promises to preserve a trove of Christmas traditions and childhood memories for future generations.
Under the umbrella of Cork County Council’s ‘A Real Cork Christmas’ initiative, the Cork County Age Friendly Programme invited members of Cork County Older People’s Council to send their stories of Christmas Traditions and Childhood memories of Christmas.

The Council normally hosts a dinner for older people, those living with disabilities, and their carers every Christmas - but Covid-19 has forced its cancellation this year.
Cork County Council has been encouraging the community to support each other as part of their campaign for A Real Cork Christmas .

The World Meteorlogical Organisation has recently published its Provisional Statement on the State of the Global Climate in 2020, noting that this year is on course to be one of the three warmest years on record worldwide.
Ireland s meteorological data for 2020 also provides further evidence of a warming Ireland, according to Met Éireann. 2020 is on course to be the joint ninth warmest year on record in Ireland and the 10th consecutive year with an above normal temperature.
Analysis has shown that February was the wettest February in over 50 years with 252% of normal rain falling.
Commenting on the data, Met Éireann Senior Climatologist Keith Lambkin said: As the WMO publishes its Provisional Statement of the State of the Global Climate 2020 , it s an opportunity to reflect on how 2020 compares to Ireland s normal climate. Extreme weather experienced in Ireland in 2020 is likely to become more common into the future.
