CarolinaEast and the local community are mourning the death of Megan McGarvey

Alexander Thalmann, first responders honored at CarolinaEast dedication

CarolinaEast Health System honored New Bern heroes – especially fallen New Bern Police Officers by dedicating its ambulance bay to first responders and naming its new trauma center the Alexander E. Thalmann Trauma Center. Officer Thalmann was slain by a bullet while in the line of duty in 2014. Struck down while pursuing a suspect near Craven Terrace on March 28th, he was treated at CarolinaEast and quickly shipped to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville where he succumbed to his wounds on March 31st. He is buried near his home in Washington, NC. A dedication ceremony was held Tuesday morning in front of the ambulance bay, attended by numerous members of the first responders community from firemen and ambulance personnel to police representing several municipalities and the Craven County Sheriff’s Office.

CarolinaEast, UNC Health to work together in health care for Craven

CarolinaEast Health System is officially affiliated with UNC Health, the hospital announced today. Representatives of both health systems were at the CarolinaEast Medical Center to give the announcement on Wednesday during a press conference. CEHS CEO Ray Leggett stated that “Affiliating with UNC Health and working toward becoming a healthcare hub in this region is a tremendous opportunity for CarolinaEast and the people we serve. We look forward to working with UNC Health entities in Eastern North Carolina including Onslow, Wayne and Lenoir hospitals.” He emphasized that the hospital would remain independent. “We did not sell CarolinaEast,” he said. Under the terms of the arrangement, CarolinaEast remains a separate legal entity under the authority of its own Board of Directors. Jared Brinkley hired as executive director of the CarolinaEast Foundation

Sun Journal staff CarolinaEast Health System hired native New Bernian Jared Brinkley as the executive director of the CarolinaEast Foundation, the charitable arm of the health system. Brinkley joined CarolinaEast Health System on Monday, May 3 and will precept with outgoing Foundation Director Jill Thompson through June 2021, according to a news release. Brinkley comes to CarolinaEast following a 10-year tenure in athletic development, most recently as the Director of Major Gifts at the University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide Foundation. We are pleased to have Jared join our team, said CarolinaEast President and CEO Ray Leggett, in the release. He brings a wealth of experience in philanthropy and will be a great addition to an already strong Administration at CarolinaEast that I’m blessed to work with every day.

Longtime Brownwood resident to celebrate 100th birthday

Longtime Brownwood resident to celebrate 100th birthday Special to the Bulletin Lois Pettijohn, a native of the Proctor Community who has lived in her Brownwood home for the past 57 years, will celebrate her 100th birthday April 22. Her family compiled the following information about her: Lois was born in the Proctor Community to Hamilton and Ethel Gaines on April 22, 1921. She was raised in a farming family and graduated from Proctor High School in 1938, and attended Tarleton State College now Tarleton State University in 1956. She married Seth E. Moore in 1942. The Moores farmed in the Baggett community, eventually moving to Comanche where they owned and operated three grocery stores.
