The distillery has been lying closed since July 24. In January this year, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had announced that the government has decided to close the unit.
This comes even as the Punjab government is preparing to issue orders to permanently shut down the distillery owned by liquor baron and Shiromani Akali Dal’s former MLA Deep Malhotra.
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has stated in its report that the reverse boring technique was allegedly used at the Zira ethanol plant to dispose of harmful chemicals, which led to contamination of underground water, thus making it unfit for drinking.
