The distillery has been lying closed since July 24. In January this year, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had announced that the government has decided to close the unit.
This comes even as the Punjab government is preparing to issue orders to permanently shut down the distillery owned by liquor baron and Shiromani Akali Dal’s former MLA Deep Malhotra.
In its report submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has stated that none of the 29 water samples taken from in and around the Zira ethanol plant is fit for human consumption.
