The BBMP aims to double the number of spaying and neutering of strays this fiscal year. However, the civic body is struggling to find land for the animal birth control (ABC) centres in the city, especially in Mahadevapura and Bommanahalli zones. As per survey data, there are 58,377 stray dogs in Mahadevapura and 39,183 stray dogs in Bommanahalli.
Munesh Kunar, a 9th standard student, said the visit made him realise the importance of feeding stray dogs. “I gave vegetables to animals and biscuits to dogs. I will be friendly with stray animals in future,’’ said Munesh Kumar.
Based on complaints lodged by cattle owners, Soladevanahalli Police have registered a first information report (FIR) and arrested the accused for allegedly throwing acid on the cattle. “We have registered an FIR and also taken the accused into custody,’’ said Soladevanahalli Police Inspector.
Animal activists are up in arms against the AHVS authorities for shutting down the animal helpline (8277100200) as they failed to renew the contract that was ended on October 31.
Animal activists said that it has become a habit for the BBMP authorities to follow directions given by politicians and influential people against stray dogs and birds. They opine that the BBMP authorities should take up the responsibility of feeding stray dogs, pigeons, and other birds instead of restricting those who want to feed pigeons.
