India once grew more than 1,00,000 varieties of rice. History and mythology bear proof that rice was served to Gods, kings, and commoners across India’s geographically diverse corners, for millennia. Closer home, ask your grandparents about rice, and they will tell you of different varieties used for different dishes, one known for its fragrance, another considered healthy for pregnant women.

New Delhi: A group of senior economists have released an open letter to the Union agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar calling for the repeal of the three contentious farm bills “which are not in the best interests of the small and marginal farmers of the country”.
The signatories, including professor D. Narasimha Reddy formerly with the National Institute of Rural Development, said that while changes were needed in the agricultural marketing system, the “reforms brought by these Acts do not serve that purpose”.

Despite the best efforts of the ruling dispensation and the pliant media to discredit the farmers’ protest at the borders of Delhi, the movement has started getting support from other states as well busting the attempts to present the farmers movement as Punjab centric with a Haryana spill over at best.
Ahmedabad woke up to graffiti in support of the farmers’ movement. There were wall paintings and slogans visible at no less than half a dozen prominent spots like near Gujarat College, Lal Darwaza and District Panchayat Office. Anonymous graffiti artists had linked the plight of the migrants to the ongoing farmers movement. More so, as under the pretext of the pandemic the authorities in Gujarat have not been allowing people to gather for protests.

As the stand-off between the agitating farmers and the BJP-led central government continued for the third week, top economists from some of the most reputed research institutions in the country, have raised serious concerns about the farm laws, and demanded their repeal.
Putting their weight firmly behind the agitating farmers, the economists D Narsimha Reddy, Kamal Nayan Kabra, K N Harilal, Ranjit Singh Ghuman, Surinder Kumar, Arun Kumar, Rajinder Chaudhary, R Ramakumar, Vikas Rawal and Himanshu, have said these laws are not in best interests of small and marginal farmers, and demanded their revocation.
