99 Songs is the journey of a young man named Jay whose life centres around his two great loves: music and his girlfriend Sofia. According to Mr. Rahman, “99 Songs is about a musician trying to make it against the odds and his struggle between the old world and the new world. The antidote is music.” 99 Songs is Jay’s quest to understand his purpose and passion, to overcome the challenges that stand between him and everything he cares

A living legend of improvised music, with a career now spanning more than five decades, John McLaughlin is no stranger to translating tumultuous moments into compelling, thoughtful audio art. Witness his searing contributions to Miles Davis’s infamous Jack Johnson sessions, the explosively pioneering rock/jazz hybrid he helped create as a member of the first edition of Tony Williams’s Lifetime, or the expansive explorations encompassed by his own music be it the rhythmic revolution of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, the unprecedented east/west fusion of Shakti, or the thrilling telepathic interplay his current outfit, the 4th Dimension.
Written & Directed by Vishwesh Krishnamurthy
Make no mistake. This is a highly ambitious film where the musical phenomenon A R Rahman wants to prove to the world that music can conquer hearts, change the world, and reform corrupt politicians. Just how this Rahman-helmed love story gets there, is a mystery. The plot is a befuddling brew of Mills & Boon , mysticism, and of course music.
I don’t know if the film has 99 songs. But there is one after every 5-10 minutes. And the film is 2 hours and 12 minutes long. So do your math while the film’s hero Jai(a striking debut by Ehan Bhat) journeys from innocent romance in the city to a jazz-swathed club called Red Mascara in Shillong where Lisa Ray behaves like Ma Rainey with a not-so-black bottom slithering and seducing poor Jai away from the love of his life Sophie(Edilsy Vargas). Jai’s girlfriend Sophie changes her hair and flies off to a foreign land to paint and grieve .
Zindagi mein dekhne se zyada mehsoos karna zaroori hain.
Aur music
humein mehsoos karna sikhata hain”. This line in 99 Songs effectively sums up the film. This is a film in which you can actually ‘see’ the music. You see it when a young Jay, denied a toy guitar by his father, flies a kite, but riffs on its string like a guitar. You see it when an older Jay (debutant Ehan Bhat) runs his fingers lyrically on the keys of a piano as he faces off in a musical jugalbandi with an old friend. You see it at the end when Jay and his girlfriend Sophia (Edilsy Vargas) are reunited in a frame that resembles an opera. You see and feel music soaring, pulsating, life-affirming, heartbreaking in each of the 133 minutes of 99 Songs.
