BENGALURU: Despite having ample time on its hands, the State Government failed to anticipate the severity of the second wave, as cautioned by the Technical Advisory Committee in November itself. Now, Bengaluru is on the brink of experiencing a Chamarajanagar-like tragedy due to shortage of oxygen in the hospitals.
The domestic equity barometers were currently trading near the day s high in mid-morning trade. At 11:29 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was up 126.58 points or 0.27% to 46,793.04. The Nifty 50 index added 38.05 points or 0.28% at 13,720.75.
Investor sentiment received a boost after the US Federal Reserve strengthened its commitment to supporting the recovery in the world s largest economy, and the U.S. lawmakers continued to make progress in getting a fiscal stimulus deal over the line.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index gained 0.62% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index rose 0.61%.
The market breadth was strong. On the BSE, 1619 shares rose and 1067 shares fell. A total of 167 shares were unchanged.
Domestic equity benchmarks came off record high levels in late trade and ended with decent gains on Thursday. Strength in financial stocks offset losses in IT, FMCG and auto shares. The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, added 223.88 points or 0.48% to 46,890.34. The Nifty 50 index advanced 58 points or 0.42% to 13,740.70. Both the indices attained record closing high levels.
The S&P BSE Sensex hit a record high of 46,992.57 while the Nifty hit a record high of 13,773.25 in afternoon trade.
HDFC (up 2.92%), HDFC Bank (up 2.17%), Bajaj Finance (up 2.74%) and Reliance Industries (up 0.46%) were major market movers.

Wonderla Holidays Ltd., India s largest amusement park chain, has received formal approval from the Ramanagara Deputy Commissioner to resume operations of its theme park in Bangalore. The theme park will be open to the public again from 18th December onwards.
